BPCI in Puyallup Provides Turnkey Approach To Deliver Stylish Developments

The view from practically anywhere in Puyallup includes the handiwork of one of the area’s most ubiquitous general contracting firms‚ BPCI.
Earlier this year‚ when a vacant warehouse in downtown Puyallup was replaced by a modern 29‚000-square-foot building to house offices and a restaurant‚ BPCI was behind the project. Nearby‚ the former Department of Social and Health Services building is being transformed into 20‚000-square-feet of condo space by the company. Across the street‚ BPCI also recently renovated Valley Bank’s headquarters – and the list goes on at locations throughout town.
According to Michael Cholerton‚ vice president and part owner of the company‚ BPCI distinguishes itself by offering a turnkey approach for development that provides assistance with each step of the process including site selection‚ financing and working with the city to secure all necessary permits to begin construction.
“This has been a main driver behind our growth. A lot of business owners don’t have the time to focus on every detail involved with relocating or expanding their companies because they’re busy running their businesses‚” says Cholerton. “They feel comfortable leaving these things to us because we have the relationships and experience to get it done.”
The approach has helped BPCI increase its business volume from $20 million to $30 million over the past year. It has also helped the company win contracts to build many of the new structures along Valley Avenue just north of the city for clients including LOI Distribution‚ SeaTac Packaging‚ Scafco Corp.‚ Liberty Inderbitzen Distributors‚ Triangle Distribution‚ Linde Forklifts‚ Sonderen Packaging‚ Wheel Pros and JCA Corp.
With a successful track record that spans nearly 40 years‚ BPCI’s founder‚ Bob Pearson‚ continues to break new ground in the industry. In 1969‚ Pearson founded BPCI as a homebuilder in Kentucky. In the 1980s‚ he moved the company to San Diego to focus on medical and technical projects. Ten years later‚ he opened a satellite office in Tacoma‚ and then moved to Puyallup in 2004. Today‚ Cholerton and three additional longtime employees‚ Russ Morris‚ Rudy Tetrault and Sharla Pearson‚ all share ownership of the company with Pearson.
For other local players in the construction industry‚ including Mike Cina‚ who is president of AustinCina Architects‚ BPCI’s commitment to quality has helped raise the bar for future development in the area.
“The bottom line is that they know how to build a very good product‚ they work well with clients and they understand how to get things done‚” says Cina‚ who has worked on hundreds of projects with BPCI.
Part of BPCI’s ongoing success‚ says Cholerton‚ is the company’s ability to rely on in-house resources to complete projects from start to finish. BPCI performs 60 percent of its own work without the help of subcontractors. This enables the company to maintain full control of projects and therefore guarantee quality‚ timeliness and cost.
Cholerton also points to the positive working relationship BPCI shares with the city of Puyallup as a contributing factor to the company’s success.
“The city’s staff and leadership have really made an effort to cooperate with developers and grow together in a smart way. They have been very friendly and welcoming‚” says Cholerton. “They have their rules and procedures required to maintain order but they are very open to meeting and spending time with us to get the project done right.”
