Location

Puyallup and Sumner are in northwest Washington‚ between the southern shores of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier. The cities are about 15 miles southeast of Tacoma and 35 miles south of Seattle.

Beginnings

Puyallup was officially founded in 1877 by pioneer Ezra Meeker‚ who named the town after the neighboring Puyallup Indians.

Puyallup‚ which means land of generous people‚ was incorporated in 1890.

Sumner was settled in 1853 and incorporated in 1891. Legend has it that the town was named for Thomas Sumner‚ father-in-law of the aforementioned Ezra Meeker.
